PRP Platelet-Rich Plasma

Doctor-led PRP therapy in Manchester, using your own platelets to support skin renewal.

PRP Platelet-Rich Plasma

Using your body's own healing factors

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a treatment made from your own blood. A small sample is taken and placed in a centrifuge, which separates the blood so that a concentrated plasma rich in platelets can be collected. Platelets contain growth factors involved in tissue repair, and PRP therapy aims to use these to stimulate skin renewal, improve texture and give a fresher look.

At Evolve Aesthetics in Manchester, PRP is carried out by medical professionals in a clinical setting, using sterile, single-use equipment. Because the material comes from you, there is no foreign product involved, which many people find appealing. PRP is often combined with microneedling, and your doctor will explain whether that makes sense for your concern.

Why choose it

What PRP therapy may help with

Skin renewal

Growth factors in PRP are intended to stimulate the skin's natural repair processes.

Improved texture and tone

Many people notice smoother, brighter-looking skin as treatment progresses.

Support for under-eye skin

PRP is often considered for thin, crepey or tired-looking undereye skin.

Uses your own biology

Because the plasma is yours, the risk of allergic reaction to the product itself is low.

How PRP works

When tissue is injured, platelets gather and release growth factors that signal the body to repair and regenerate. PRP therapy concentrates these platelets and delivers them to the skin, which may encourage the production of collagen and improve the skin's quality over time.

It is important to be honest about the evidence. PRP has been studied widely, and many patients report benefit, but the quality of research in aesthetic uses varies, and results can differ between individuals. It is not a miracle treatment. Your doctor will explain what it can reasonably be expected to do for you and whether another approach might give a better outcome.

What happens during treatment

A small amount of blood is taken from your arm, in much the same way as a routine blood test. The sample is spun in a centrifuge for several minutes to separate the PRP. Meanwhile, numbing cream may be applied to your skin. The PRP is then delivered into the skin, either by fine injections, through microneedling or a combination of both, depending on your plan.

You may feel brief stinging or scratching. Afterwards the skin looks pink or red and may feel warm and tight, similar to mild sunburn. Swelling is possible, particularly under the eyes, and can last a day or two. Small bruises may appear. Because your own plasma is used, you can generally resume most activities fairly quickly, although you should avoid heavy makeup and strong skincare for a short time.

Aftercare and treatment course

Careful aftercare helps your skin recover well. We generally recommend the following.

A course of treatments is commonly recommended, with sessions spaced a few weeks apart, followed by occasional maintenance. Your doctor will plan this around your skin and goals.

  • Avoid touching or rubbing the treated area for several hours
  • Avoid makeup for the rest of the day, then use clean, gentle products
  • Skip intense exercise, saunas and hot showers for 24 hours
  • Avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids until advised
  • Use daily sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure

Safety and who should avoid it

PRP is generally considered low-risk because it uses your own blood, but side effects can include redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness and, rarely, infection. Treatment is not recommended if you have certain blood disorders, are taking blood-thinning medication without medical clearance, have active infection in the treatment area or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Please tell us about your medical history, medications and any history of fainting during blood tests. Eating well and staying hydrated before your appointment can make blood collection easier. PRP will not lift sagging skin or fill hollows, and we will be open if another treatment would better address your concern.
