Microneedling

Doctor-led microneedling in Manchester, for smoother, firmer-looking skin.

Microneedling

Teaching the skin to renew itself

Microneedling, sometimes called collagen induction therapy, uses very fine needles to create controlled microscopic channels in the skin. The skin responds by starting its natural repair process, which includes producing new collagen and elastin. Over a course of treatments, this can improve texture, soften the appearance of pores and acne scars and give a firmer, fresher look.

At Evolve Aesthetics in Manchester, microneedling is carried out in a clinical setting by a trained professional, with settings chosen to match your skin and concern. Some microneedling systems also combine needles with radiofrequency energy, and your clinician will explain exactly which device and approach is used in your treatment.

Why choose it

What microneedling can help with

Smoother texture

Collagen stimulation can help skin feel and look more even over a course.

Refined pores

Many people notice pores looking less prominent as skin quality improves.

Acne scar improvement

Microneedling is widely used to soften the appearance of atrophic, or indented, acne scars.

Firmer-looking skin

Mild laxity and early signs of ageing can look improved as collagen builds.

How microneedling works

When the needles create tiny channels in the skin, the body interprets this as minor injury and begins a repair cascade. Growth factors are released, blood flow to the area increases and fibroblasts start laying down fresh collagen and elastin. Because the epidermis is only minimally disrupted, healing is generally faster than with ablative lasers.

The depth of the needles can be adjusted, from very shallow for skin refreshment to deeper for scarring. The right depth depends on the area being treated and on your skin. Results are not instant. Collagen takes weeks to remodel, which is why many people see the best improvement a few weeks after a session and why courses are recommended.

What happens during your appointment

After consultation and skin assessment, your face is cleansed and a numbing cream is applied for a period of time to make treatment comfortable. The device is then moved across the skin in measured passes. Many people describe a scratching or vibrating sensation, with some areas, such as the upper lip and forehead, more sensitive.

Afterwards, the skin looks red, a bit like mild sunburn, and can feel warm and tight. Pinpoint bleeding or tiny bumps are possible with deeper settings. A calming serum or mask may be applied, followed by sunscreen. Redness commonly fades within a day or two, though it can last longer depending on depth. Mild flaking or dryness may follow, and makeup is usually avoided for a short period.

Aftercare and building results

The skin is more absorbent immediately after microneedling, so product choice matters. Guidance generally includes the following.

A course is typically spaced four to six weeks apart to allow collagen to remodel between sessions. Maintenance treatments may be advised afterwards, and microneedling can be combined with other skin treatments in a considered sequence.

  • Use only gentle cleansers and soothing moisturisers for the first days
  • Apply daily sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure
  • Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids and active ingredients until advised
  • Avoid heavy exercise, saunas and swimming pools for 24 to 48 hours
  • Do not pick at any flaking or scabbing

Risks, suitability and expectations

Common effects include redness, tenderness, swelling and dryness. Less common risks include infection, cold sore flare-ups, pigmentation changes and, rarely, scarring. Treatment is generally not suitable over active acne breakouts, skin infections, eczema flares or open wounds, and it is not recommended in pregnancy.

You should tell us about any history of keloid scarring, blood-thinning medication, recent isotretinoin use or recurring cold sores. Microneedling is not a substitute for surgery and will not tighten significant sagging skin. If your concerns are better suited to peels, laser or skin boosters, your doctor will tell you honestly and advise on an effective sequence.
